The school is from a vision by a native Ugandian, Godfrey Mawejje. Mawejje and Agnes, his wife, observed rapid educational growth in their children when they moved from Uganda to North America. They attributed this change to a school system of teaching and learning that encouraged thinking, reading and writing. Most schools in Uganda use the rote system which require students to memorize material given to them by their teachers and which must be returned at the end of the school term. In the big cities of Uganda there are good schools, however, only wealthy children can go. Many of these schools also only take children with top marks and focus on the boys. The definition of a "good school" can often mean one that has the doors and windows, roof, water and hydro - the education process is still the same being memorization and repetition.

When Mawejje returned to Uganda in 1999 with a plan for a school, parents in the village of Kalagala embraced the idea. A committee went to the district headquarters to try and change the system of education, not just for the village but for everyone. It took six months but ultimately the government said no. The committee then asked if they could start their own school. The government consented and said as long as they built a school that met building codes, they could do whatever they wanted.

This was the inspiration for Kalagala to establish their own high school. Fisher Branch Kalagala High School's goals are to provide holistic education that encourages independent and critical thinking.
